A few months ago I learned of this story about a once-white supremacist and his black probation officer and was surprised to tune into The Kelly Clarkson show to find out their story was being told in celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King. The white man in this video stated his family once lived in the housing projects with all blacks and he was picked on while living as the only white family in the housing projects. As he grew older he got into trouble and was sent away to jail where he encountered hate groups and joined one. The black women in the video were assigned to be his probation officer and she was not sure what she was up against when agreeing to visit his trailer alone. Even though the black probation officer was geared up in a bulletproof vest and a gun, she stated she was still apprehensive because she was not sure how he was going to take her being his probation officer and for being in his home. The two actually built a relationship and became friends to the point that he invited her to his wedding and she was the only black person there. He actually stated that she made him feel noticed when he felt no one cared or noticed him and he respected her. It’s amazing how a person can touch and change another person’s life when least expected. A relationship between an ex-white supremacist and his former probation officer is a testament to what can be possible in a world that is filled with prejudgement, racism, and senseless hate.
